Dudi Sela marked his 10th trip to the US Open with a first round victory over 21-year-old wild card recipient, Christopher Eubanks on Monday.
Sela’s first meeting with the hard hitting 6-foot-7 inch Georgia Tech college student lasted just over 90 minutes with Sela coasting to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2
victory, setting up a second round meeting Wednesday with 17th seed Sam Querrey.
Sela is aiming to reach the third round in New York for the first time in his career.
Sela, ranked No. 71 in the world, was pleased with his performance. “I think today I returned a lot of balls from his serve and let him play a lot of balls. I kept a lot of balls in play and when I had the chance, I made him move a little bit,” said Sela.
“My first serve, I didn’t go for too much. I had a good percentage. I played very solid.”
Eyal Ran, captain of Israel’s Davis team, watched the match and observed, “It was a great first round for him.” Ram felt winning in straight sets “gives him lots of confidence and lets him preserve his strength for the rest of the tournament.”
